By Lydia K
"I am a textile artist, potter and tattooer. Folk art and vintage fabrics are a source of inspiration in all my work; I’ve always been attracted to the bright colours, flowers and geometric patterns used by regular people through history to decorate homes and everyday objects.
I started painting on silk near the end of my BFA program at NSCAD University in the late 90s. I use a technique called gutta serti, applying a gummy resist to the fabric to create shapes then brushing on dyes around it. For this group of paintings I’ve tried to let the composition take form in the process rather than planning it ahead of time. Floral shapes emerge from marshy, floating landscapes or hover in a nebulous colourful space.”
This event is being held on the shared and unceded traditional territories of Penelakut, Lamalcha, Hwitslum, Coast Salish Peoples of Galiano - Lelum Sar Augh Ta Naogh First Nation and other Hul’qumi’num and SENCOTEN speaking peoples as well as the ceded territories of Tsawwassen First Nation, on what is now known as Galiano Island.
