About The Event
In a world of endless images scrolling by, what makes us stop and take a second look?
Why make photographs with old technology like film when it's easier and quicker to use your phone? Why bother to think at all about the act of looking?
In this 2.5 hour workshop, participants (ages 10-18) will be introduced to the idea of ‘critical looking’—looking with your brain, your eyes, and your heart at the same time. By working together as a group, we will begin to analyze what makes interesting images in our contemporary world. Youth will be provided with one disposable colour film camera for hands-on supervised picture making in and around the Yellowhouse Art Centre. Emphasizing an experimental and collaborative spirit, participants will have the opportunity to make images of their worlds. Pictures will be hand-developed by the facilitator, scanned, and made available to participants via digital files one week after the workshop!
If desired a separate workshop (Experimental Photography 102) will explore the black & white or colour darkroom printing process well as simple pinhole photography. Participants who have film from Experimental Photography 101 may be able choose to print out some of their photographs into 8x10 inch prints in the darkroom!
